Art Work North is a group of five artists who have come together after studying art at York College.
We regularly meet up, to continue and develop our different practices, building on what we have learned, enjoying the support and friendship of people with a passion for making art. Our studies have been life changing for every one of us, and we are making the most of the fact that we work in different media, and can share techniques and approaches across our work.
Four of us met five years ago on the Access to Art and Design course, and loved every minute of our time there. We all went on to different further studies. The fifth member completed a Fine Art Degree in Scarborough, having completed an excellent Foundation course at York College several years ago.
Now, we all value friends to meet with, to exhibit with, to discuss and crit our work, and to enjoy art together. We go to each other’s houses every month, and keep in touch all the time on WhatsApp, to help and support both the good and the bad bits about art practice. A typical question is ‘This is looking all wrong… what do I do next?’…
‘Art Work North – A Sense of Place’ is a themed exhibition resulting from our group and individual work. We all love Yorkshire, and influences of our home county can be seen in everything that we do.
We have had some ‘group trips’ – for instance we spent a freezing cold Saturday in January drawing, taking photos and drinking tea at Fountains Abbey, then went away to develop our sketchbooks and make work based on the day’s experience. We’ve also been to the Himalayan gardens, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Andy Goldsworthy Hanging Stones walk in Rosedale.
Alongside those trips we’ve been working on our own projects, and we’re presenting both group and individual work here. We’ve also been involved in lots of events and exhibitions around the area in places like Sheffield, Scarborough and Barton on Humber.
A fabulous supportive group of artists
